Should You Paint An Accent Wall?

In Homeowner Tips, Interior Painting by Jeff Dupont3 Comments

When thinking about paint colors, many people opt for one bold, dramatic accent wall to mark their individual tastes and styles. If you’re thinking of painting an accent wall, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, placing an accent wall is a bit of an art.

Kristie Barnett from The Decorologist couldn’t have said it better.

“It never ceases to amaze me just which wall people will choose to accent.  To accent is to draw attention to one thing – one wall, right?  So make sure you accent the right wall.  Why is this wall accented, anyway? Don’t be arbitrary with your paint.  Some of the right places for an accent wall include a fireplace wall, the wall that anchors your bed, an interesting nook, or a bookcase wall.”

While it sounds simple, we understand why this is often overlooked in the excitement of choosing new colors.  An accent color can effectively reflect your personal style, and can also brighten up your home in the often-gloomy Seattle winter months – Maximize the effect by placing the color where you want the focus of the room to be.

Here’s another thing to consider: While seldom considered when painting accents, the ceiling is a wall, too!  In fact, Barnett says that the ceiling is often the best choice.

Usually the perfect accent wall in any room is . . . the ceiling! why not paint the walls a nice neutral and put the color on the ceiling?

Again, a well placed accent wall can do wonders for your room.  However, as Barnett says, if you really love a color, why not use it for the whole room?

I’m certainly not against having an accent wall, but you need to think about why you want one.  Sometimes I think people are too scared to paint the entire room the color they really love.  So they paint some wimpy neutral, then paint one wall the color they really wanted.

If you were to ask us a general color we might suggest, we would say navy blue.  If you’re nervous about a color that’s too bold, this color is neither too loud nor too dull.  It looks great in your living/family or media room.  And it couldn’t be more appropriate for the 12th Man here in Seattle!

Nice! All it’s missing is the Seahawks Decor.
