Earlier this year, we wrote about how painting the exterior of your home is a cost-effective way to add value to your home. Now that it is winter, we will be discussing simple ways to add value to your home by updating the interior! This list includes some of our favorite low-cost methods. These options are inexpensive, but all can have a big impact on the overall appearance of a space, and leave a lasting impression.

1. Changing light fixtures
This is one of the easiest upgrades you can make.  We recommend replacing your current light fixtures with something brighter, more modern, and more energy-efficient.  Properly placed lighting can add warmth and friendliness to a room, and energy-efficient options will even save you money.

2. Updating cabinets
One of the most economical options is to replace cabinet hardware. Cabinet hardware is generally inexpensive, and you can easily install it yourself!  This is one of the smaller changes on the list, but it can make a dramatic difference in the overall appearance of a room!   You may also update your cabinets by (re)painting them. We really like this conversion varnish from ML Campbell.  You can see the product in action on a recent cabinetry project by Sound Painting Solutions here.

3. Adding new blinds
New blinds (or curtains) can fade, wear out, and accumulate dirt over time.  Update old, standard blinds or curtains to add personality to a room.  An alternative is to replace your blinds with shutters. Find some inspiration here.

4. Adding crown molding
Adding crown molding is inexpensive and adds elegance to a room.  Another great option is to freshen up existing trim by repainting it.  A professional painting contractor like Sound Painting Solutions can repaint old trim or even paint newly installed trim.

5. Replacing electrical outlet covers
This is another subtle change that can add style to a room.  With the wide variety of options available, you can pick an outlet cover that complements existing decor!  It may seem like a small change, it can make a surprisingly big impression.

6. Painting walls
Of course! Painting walls is the most obvious and often most dramatic way to change the mood of a room.  A reputable contractor like Sound Painting Solutions will make sure to cover and protect your furniture & surrounding areas and thoroughly prepare all surfaces for a clean, long-lasting finish.
